Hyperglycemia is a major symptom of Diabetes Mellitus.
Diabetes occurs due to insulin deficiency or resistance of body cells to the action of insulin, which leads to chronic elevation of blood sugar levels.
Type I diabetes is also known as insulin dependent diabetes, immune mediated diabetes or juvenile-onset diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are insulin dependent and require insulin for survival.
Type 2 diabetes is also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes or late-onset diabetes. Type 2 diabetes may be treated by dietary changes, exercise and/or tablets.
In gestational diabetes, glucose levels in the blood get elevated during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is first diagnosed during pregnancy.
