Main causes of hypothyroidism are Hashimoto?s disease, radioactive iodine treatment, thyroid operation, medication, subacute thyroiditis and congenital hypothyroidism.
In hypothyroidism, the T4 level would be low, while the TSH level would be high and it is treated with thyroxine replacement.
In life insurance underwriting, no additional risk is seen in cases of adult hypothyroidism. Only presence of coronary artery disease indicates a poor prognosis.
